This r&r of my manuscript has passive voice. Sections with telling instead of showing. A decent amount of art notes. And a character that doesn't solve their own problem. And it's 🔥🔥🔥. Break the 'rules'. Just break them well.
@ptntweets @MariaMarshall_ @NealPorterBooks @HolidayHouseBks This new book, WHEN GRANDPA FLEW by Patricia MacLachlan, illustrated by Chris Sheban, looks wonderful. I've added it to my growing list of (now more than 185) diverse #PictureBooks about #grandparents.
Sunisa Lee won the gold medal in the individual all-around gymnastics competition, continuing a U.S victory streak that began when Carly Patterson earned the title in 2004.
@PBChat1 The "rule of 3's," the rule of watching word count, the rule of making your MC a couple of years older than your reader, et al...they can all be tossed aside if the story demands it and you know what you're doing. #PBChat
@PBChat1 @Michael2Wayne As with most creative pursuits, it's important to know and understand the rules before you break them. And they can all be broken. #PBChat
@SuzyK5 @PBChat1 I get called out often enough for my word choice being too advanced for kids, but I stand firm that kids need, thrive and learn from these words.
@AndrewCHacket @PBChat1 I agree with you 100%, Andrew. Vocabulary development is important in PBs. The author can use context clues, if need be. The illustrator can support the unknown word in the text. Words to Know or a Glossary can be added as back matter for both nonfiction and fiction PBs. #PBChat
@christinafrigo @PBChat1 *Their problem gets solved. And in a comedic way. But the mc doesn't really solve it in the traditional sense. #PBChat
@christinafrigo @PBChat1 In the newest r&r of my book on sub, (pretty much a horror-comedy in picture book format), the main character doesn't solve their problem at the end. #PBChat
@PBChat1 @MindyAlyseWeiss Asking the creator what their vision is helps me figure out how to best help them. What are they wanting to do with this story? That helps me frame my critique. If they wanna be rule breakers, I'll critique from that lens and throw caution to the wind 😅 #pbchat
@PBChat1 I've mentioned in other chats that an established author critiqued my #FlashlightNight ms and suggested I change nearly everything that made it unique. (see the graphic for my notes) If I'd listened to her, I wouldn't have a book! #PBChat
@PBChat1 My agent quit agenting and it was sad. But so far I got 3 amazing offers. It will be tough to choose.
@PBChat1 I've received numerous rejections lately...however, my ONCE UPON ANOTHER TIME publisher Beaming Books just announced last week that my next book with them, A BEGINNERS GUIDE TO BEING HUMAN, will be out Oct. 2022! #PBChat
Distracted from working on my MG novel by a very interesting PBChat on rule breaking, organized by @PBChat1 #writerslife #picturebooks.
Remembering Kathleen Krull's birthday...She was known for her lively biographies filled with quirky details and odd tidbits. Of her over 100 books, many were listed as ALA Notable Books, and her bio about Cesar Chavez was a Pura Belpré Honor Book. #kidlit #ChildrensBooks
