@FrenchTrace @shoehazing Sigh, both have advantages and disadvantages but to act like both have access to the same resources and opportunities is the true folly. Being formally trained at something is an advantage regardless of what YOU do with that training.
@zachhazard Yh, your thread is sanctimonious, privileged and mad dismissive. And this last tweet from you just told me everything I need to know. How you don’t see the connections is just WILD. I’m done here.
I’m literally still learning so fucking much that my formally educated peers would have no doubt being taught or had access to at the establishments they attended. The anxiety this can cause is something I struggle with daily, but I push through innit. 💆🏿♂️
@zachhazard Mate, This sounds more like you have an issue with the quality of the art schools you’ve encountered more than anything. That’s a whole other discussion.
@FrenchTrace @shoehazing SAY IT AGAIN PLEASE!! These people tryna act like there’s no advantages to art school vs self taught. FOH
@KatHumanArt THANK YOU! It’s actual BS. Nearly every musician I know taught themselves the basics to a high standard before they could afford any type of actual training. And a significant number went on to develop their own sounds without any actual training.
@zachhazard Again, I’m not here to glorify arr schools, but you acting like they don’t make a significant difference vs being self taught is a lie I’m not buying into. Like everything else, what YOU do with any advantage is what counts, that doesn’t mean you didn’t have an advantage tho.
It took me ten self taught fucking years to break into this industry, despite the disadvantages I’m very proud of that grind. I hate when people who didn’t go through it try and play down it’s significance when it comes to access to work in this industry.
Nah, This dude just struck a real nerve with me man. I can’t stand people with very clear advantages in this industry being dismissive of the achievements of a demographic they’re not from.
@zachhazard Artists that go to school are given access/proximity to resources that can prove priceless. Their “cobbling together” is not at all the same. Please stop fronting.
@zachhazard You yourself speak of the connections just being an art students affords you. I don’t get how you can play that down when all you have to do is take a look at the show runners in the animation industry and who knows who from school for evidence of its significance.
@zachhazard Dude, I’m not here to glorify the “art school experience” but I’m also not gonna act like it doesn’t provide students with any significant advantages over those who can’t even afford to go. There is a very significant difference.
@MonkeysvsRobots Still don’t agree. I’m talking about significant and relevant economic and social disadvantages that lead to people becoming self taught. To dismiss this is to not acknowledge that inequality exists in access to the arts
@zachhazard This tweet is mad dismissive of people’s lived experiences and speaks massively of your limited experiences and circle. I know a whole load of self taught musicians and artists especially who had to put in mad hours because they couldn’t afford formal lessons.
my OP should have read *if you haven’t studied art beyond online self directed courses* because again, there’s a very significant difference between having a tutor on hand and watching video to learn.
Also, the road to a successful career is very often significantly longer and more complicated for self taught artists than it is for folks who had specialist training or went to art school. To dismiss all this isn’t fair, and makes light of this particular groups achievements
I’ve lost count of the amount of things I’ve had to figure out on my own because I didn’t have the benefits of an art school environment or easily accessible peers/lecturers to ask questions.
I see what you’re trying to say but I strongly disagree. “Self taught” means you haven’t had the benefit of any actual formal training or studied art beyond high school or had any specialist training beyond that which you’ve cobbled together yourself.
