I went to a very fun ‘museum’, the ‘Atlantis Experience’ on Santorini, which was really a Plato museum with a ride that took you through what the destruction of Minoan Thera might have been like, as inspiration for the Atlantis myth. It was cute. But Atlantis was *not real*:🧵
Despite it representing an horrific event I’m quite enchanted by this illustration of the impact of a pyroclastic surge hitting Herculaneum. The statue of Nonius Balbus being blasted off the terrace above the vaulted rooms by the beach where so many people perished is so powerful
I recall the reaction a crowd @StandNewcastle had to @BennettArron last time Israel/Palestine dominated the news. A lovely liberal crowd went cold when he revealed he was jewish. British Jews have F all to do with Israel's government. Please shut down any anti semitism you hear x
Today's linguistic success: identified this bird as a partridge by hearing a Greek family exclaim "πέρδικα" when they saw it, and figuring that was Classical πέρδιξ. Now I just need to figure out why on earth I even know/remember the Classical Greek for "partridge"...
This ACTUALLY looks like a really good exhibition on Nero. And they talk about that monstrosity that shall not be named. Hopefully the BM will have some online tour options. #classicstwitter
Apologies for repeated tweets. Social media nerd @holland_tom has been bombarding me with advice about my Twitter style. "With great power comes great responsibility", or something like that.
Fans of @TheRestHistory. Questions please for next week's recordings! First up ... @holland_tom will be talking about the Emperor Nero. A cruel, depraved, narcissistic monster? Or a decent man driven mad by power and fame? Anyway, back to Nero ...
With #LullingstoneRomanVilla reopening tomorrow, it's esp. nice to receive my first US review of my @Archaeopress book. Thank you for the ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️K. Henschell! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Hope you can visit the UK and Villa sometime! @EnglishHeritage https://t.co/FLd1Y0Yv8n
